TEXAS IN THE SURF `N SLAM CLASSIC ... This year's appearance in the Maggie Dixon Surf `n Slam Classic marks Texas' fifth overall (2006-08, 2010). The Longhorns hold an all-time 7-1 record at the annual post-holiday tourney, including three tournament championships in 2006, 2007 and 2010.
LINEUP SHUFFLES ... Texas head coach Karen Aston has tested six different starting lineups through nine games. Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali has started each game, while junior guard Chassidy Fussell has started seven contests after missing two in early December due to injury. Four freshmen have cracked the starting lineup at various times including Empress Davenport (7), Imani McGee-Stafford (3), Celina Rodrigo (8) and Brady Sanders (1).
UT'S ONE-TWO SCORING PUNCH ... Junior guard Chassidy Fussell and sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali lead Texas with 18.0 and 16.2 ppg, respectively. Through games as of Dec. 22, Fussell is the third-leading scorer in the Big 12 and Enemkpali ranks seventh. UT and Oklahoma State are the only two schools in the league with a pair of scorers averaging more than 15.0 ppg.
Texas in the Polls
Texas retained its No. 20 ranking in the Dec. 24 edition of the AP Poll, and climbed two places to No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll released Dec. 25. This season, the Longhorns reached a season-high No. 12 ranking in the Dec. 3 AP Poll marking their highest ranking since reaching the same in February 2010.
Last Time Out: vs. Cornell [Dec. 20, 2012]
Freshman Imani McGee-Stafford posted her fourth double-double of the season to lift No. 20 Texas over Cornell 53-40 on Dec. 20 in Austin. McGee-Stafford had 20 points and pulled down 12 boards, including seven on the offensive end. Nneka Enemkpali grabbed 11 rebounds and Chassidy Fussell 10 for the Longhorns, who controlled the boards 48-28. Texas held a 22-16 advantage at halftime and led 29-25 some 5 minutes into the second half. From there, the Longhorns reeled off 13 straight points to jump ahead 42-25. Both teams shot poorly, with Texas at 33.9 percent (21 of 62) and Cornell (5-5) at 31.8 percent (14 of 44), but the Longhorns outscored the Big Red 28-10 in the paint and turned 19 turnovers into 24 points. Allyson DiMagno led Cornell with 13 points, but the Big Red's starters shot a combined 11 of 34.
Block Party
Texas' 6.6 bpg ranks first among all Big 12 Conference teams and is also fifth-best nationally (through all games Dec. 16). Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford leads all league freshmen with an average of 2.6 bpg, a mark that ranks 20th among all NCAA Division I players and second in the conference.
Fussell's Big Game
After missing two games with a head injury, junior guard Chassidy Fussell bounced back to score a career-high 31 points against Tennessee (Dec. 16), shooting a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line and willing her team back from a 19-point halftime deficit.
Balanced Scoring Attack
Behind Chassidy Fussell's team-high 18.0 ppg, three additional starters for the Longhorns are contributing double-figures. Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali is averaging 16.2 ppg, senior post Cokie Reed is adding 10.9 ppg and freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford is contributing 10.1 ppg.
Owning the Boards
The Longhorns have all but one opponent and are averaging 51.6 rpg. Texas' +15.8 rebounding margin is the fifth-best among all NCAA Division I teams (thru games Dec. 16). Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali ranks seventh nationally with 12.3 rpg and is the only player in the Big 12 Conference currently averaging double-figure rebounding.
Sanders Shines
Redshirt freshman Brady Sanders scored a team-leading and season-high 15 points (5-of-9 FG, 5-of-5 FT) off the bench for the first double-digit scoring effort of her career in a 77-49 win over Louisiana-Monroe (Dec. 11). More recently, Sanders earned her first career start as a Longhorn and tallied a career-high eight rebounds and three steals to go with 10 points in a career-high 35 minutes against Cornell (Dec. 20). It marked the second time in three games that she reached double-figures in scoring and all 10 of her points came in the second half.
Seeing Double
Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali leads the Big 12 Conference with six double-doubles this season. Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford is on Enemkpali's heeds with four, the second-best mark in the league.
