Dec. 16, 2010

Redshirt senior Forward Kristen Nash

On being back with the team: I'm really excited. I sat in the stands the first six or seven games and watched the girls play and it was a different feeling to be in the stands versus with the team, so I'm really excited to get to join them again.

On what she will bring to the team: They don't have a lot of depth in the post so I think they have two true posts. My sister [Kathleen Nash] is more of a guard but she's playing post right now so I'll give a lot more depth in that area and give some people some more breaks that need more breaks. I'm just going to try and do my best to rebound and play defense.

On the moment she decided to return: Coach [Goestenkors] texted me on Sunday night and asked me to come back and I thought it felt right so I said OK.

On playing with her sister again: I'm really excited. She was the first person that I was like, `Hey, I might come back,' and she was like, `Yah.' I think it will be fun, we're both very excited.

On how long it took to decide to return: Ten minutes. I went into my sister's room and talked to her and then I called coach and said OK.

On working out: I haven't touched a basketball since I left in March, I just hadn't touched a basketball. I ran usually about three miles a day and went to cycle class, but I am out of shape. I had no clue. It's different playing basketball. It's a different type of shape.

On what it was like to start handling a basketball again: It reminded me [of how much I loved it.] When I went out there and shot on Monday, it reminded me that that was the game I loved and it felt right. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, shot wise. It wasn't like it was going everywhere so I'm glad I didn't lose that, but I think it will be OK.

On Kristen Nash returning to the team:
Kristen and I, we've stayed in touch all semester and after our last game I just text her and I said, `OK, I've got to ask one more time. Would you be interested in coming back?' I think she had been away from it long enough and she had missed it and she could see that we needed some more depth in the post so it's a great day.

On enjoying seeing the passion in a player returning: Absolutely. She missed the sport, she missed her teammates and we're so excited to have her back. She's bringing a new energy to the team, to the practices. It's her first couple of practices. We've been in it for a while so to have somebody having their first few practices, the excitement, the soreness, I know she's real sore, but it's brought new energy to our team.

On Kristen's shot: Actually Kristen's shot looks really good. She said, `My shot's better than it was last year.' Her shot looks good. It's going to just be a little while for her to understand the plays. We put a lot of new sets in this year. We're running more obviously this year. That's probably going to be her toughest mission is just to know what the plays are and where we need here. She's still I think our best screener, she's still got a nice shot and she still works her tail off so you can always welcome somebody like that to the team.

On recruiting a returner: I have not. I've added quite a few new things this year. Recruiting a tennis player off the tennis team, recruiting somebody out of grad school, so who knows what the future holds.
