AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 16 ranked Texas women's basketball team faces its second top-rated opponent in four days Sunday afternoon (Dec. 4) when it hosts 5-0 Duke, the nation's No. 1 ranked team in the Associated Press Top 25, at 12:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center. The Blue Devils get the nod from AP (the media) as the nation's No. 1 squad, and are ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll.
Texas (3-2) faced Tennessee (6-0), the No. 1 team in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll (and No. 2 in AP) on Thursday, losing to the Lady Vols.
Texas has had great success at the Erwin Center the last three-plus seasons, going 25-2 in that span. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Erwin Center has been a "house of horrors" for the opposition, as the Longhorns stand 45-2 at home since that time.
Two of the nation's finest post players and two of the top collegiate freshmen will be on the floor today.
Texas is getting top production from 5-10 freshman guard Erika Arriaran (12.0 ppg, team-high 13 assists, team-high eight 3-pointers) and 6-3 junior All-American Tiffany Jackson (11.6 ppg, team-high 6.6 rpg, team-high 13 steals). Duke is led by 5-10 freshman guard Abby Waner (14.0 ppg), Kodak and AP All-America 6-0 senior Monique Currie (13.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg). Arriaran and Waner were both unanimous First Team All-Americans a year ago and both named National HS Player of the Year by different organizations (Arriaran by Parade Magazine and State Farm/WBCA, Waner by Gatorade and McDonald's).
