Hey Longhorn fans!

We’ve had a great time in the Virgin Islands last week. It was a beautiful place with amazing and unique culture! The locals openly welcomed us into St. Thomas, and we also managed to round up some new longhorn fans out there! We were teaching them how to do the “Hook ‘em Horns” sign!

As you know, the semester is coming to an end and finals are coming up soon. We wanted to keep up with our schoolwork and get some studying in, so we set aside a couple hours each morning for study hall. We managed to get a lot of work done with the help of one of our advisors, Tina.

On our first day there, we rode on a catamaran to a little island called Turtle’s Cove and went snorkeling. It was a first for me and I had a lot of fun. We saw huge sea turtles and colorful fish - it was a great experience. We also went shopping downtown and walked around on the beach. On our final morning in paradise, a few of us went parasailing! It was another first for me and I have to admit I was a little nervous. Being 450 feet in the air in the middle of the ocean can be a little overwhelming! Fortunately, it was exciting and relaxing at the same time and the view was amazing.

Even though the Virgin Islands is a breathtaking vacation spot, this was far from a vacation for us. We visited there on a mission to win three games. Unfortunately, we didn’t play as well as we wanted to on Friday and suffered a loss to Southern California. Instead of crying over spilled milk, as some might say, we focused on the next task at hand, Rutgers. We knew we had another game the next day and had to refocus. We were all determined not to go home with another loss. It was a battle until the end. We had to fight for every rebound and every loose ball. The game went back and forth; each team had their runs. Then, with about a minute left, we got the lead! Rutgers scored a huge layup, and somehow, someway, in about seven seconds, Ashleigh Fontenette found Kathleen Nash WIDE OPEN in the corner and she swished the three with one second left! It was crazy! It was exciting! We were all happy that we fought hard and never gave up even when times got hard. It was a key win against a very good team.

Now it’s back to Austin just in time for classes today. We hope to see you all at our game Tuesday night against Oral Roberts University. HOOK ‘EM!

Your Lady Longhorn,
Ashley Gayle
