The Longhorns welcomed seven freshmen - the largest rookie class in UT history - to the campus this fall along with eight returning letterwinners ...These seven were selected as the nation's No. 1 recruiting class last year by the All-Star Girls Report recruiting service... Through three games, the Longhorns have three freshmen among the top four scorers and a freshman leading the way in rebounds and blocked shots ... Rookie 5-10 guard Erika Arriaran leads the balanced scoring attack with 12.0 ppg, followed by 6-3 junior forward Tiffany Jackson (10.3), 6-4 freshman post Ashley Lindsey (9.0) and 5-6 freshman point guard Carla Cortijo (7.3 ppg) ... Lindsey has emerged as a defensive stopper in the post, averaging a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game ... Of the 22 team blocks, Lindsey has 12 (a 4.0 bpg average) ... As a team, the Longhorns are shooting 68.4 percent from the foul line ... Cortijo is 10-13 in free throws (.769), with the best percentage on the club.
The 1-1 GW Colonials are paced by 5-11 sophomore guard Sarah-Jo Lawrence (11.0 ppg)... Jessica Simmons, a 6-2 senior forward, has a 9.5 ppg average and team-high 7.5 rebounds per game, while 6-3 freshman forward Jazmine Adair (12.0 ppg) and 6-2 freshman Chantelle John (7.0 ppg) follow in the scoring column... Point guard Kimberly Beck, a 5-8 sophomore, is scoring 6.5 ppg with a team-high 11 assists (5.5 apg).
Longhorn Freshmen Step Up
The nation's heralded No. 1 recruiting class is off to a good start at Texas ... In the opener against New Mexico, 5-10 freshman guard Erika Arriaran registered 17 points, tying for the team high, while fellow rookie guard Carla Cortijo added 15 points ... In the win over Sam Houston State, six frosh contributed 47 (of 83) points, or 57 percent ... In addition, the Longhorn freshmen pulled down 39 of UT's 62 rebounds -63 percent of them ... Freshman 6-4 post Ashley Lindsey netted game - and career-highs of 15 points and five blocks to go with six rebounds, while 6-3 freshman Aubry Cook had nine points and nine rebounds; 5-11 rookie guard Crystal Boyd also put up solid numbers, getting nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Then, in the first round against South Carolina in the Junkanoo Jam tourney on Friday, the rookie duo of Arriaran and Lindsey paced the Horns ... Arriaran netted a game-high 14 points and had a team-high four steals, while Lindsey was a defensive force, finishing with a career-high and game-high tying 10 rebounds and collected eight points ... For the second game in a row, Lindsey had five blocks (game-high)... In the last two games, Lindsey has recorded 23 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks (11.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 5.0 bpg).
Longhorn Record Watch
Senior guard Nina Norman has 344 all-time assists, just ONE away from tying for the No. 8 position, held by Esoleta Whaley (345, 1980-84) ... She is 59 away from the No. 7 spot, held by Angie Jo Ogletree (403, 1993-97)... Norman led the Longhorns in assists the last two years, dishing out a career-best 142 in 35 games (4.1 as a sophomore) and 98 more a year ago (3.5 apg) in 28 contests.
Junior Tiffany Jackson (105 blocked shots) needs one block to move into a tie for the No. 8 position, held by Cinietra Henderson who had 106 rejections from 1989-93.
