Kathleen Nash selected Big 12 Co-Rookie of the Week

DALLAS -- University of Texas 6-2 freshman guard Kathleen Nash was selected co-Big 12 Rookie of the Week Monday after two standout games against Lamar and Tennessee.

In a 1-1 week for the No. 21 ranked Longhorns (2-1), Nash (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) registered 36 points and 19 rebounds off the bench, averaging 18.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while playing just 27 minutes per contest. She also added seven assists and seven steals and went five-for-nine from 3-point range. On the week, Nash shot 13-23 from the floor (57%), including a 6-for-10 effort against Tennessee which included going three-for-four from 3-point territory.

Nash’s weekly award is the first Big 12 honor by a Texas player this year. This is the second week of voting for player and freshman conference honors.

Against Lamar on Nov. 15, Nash posted UT’s first double-double of the season with game-bests of 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 94-35 win. Sunday at No. 1 Tennessee (92-67 loss), turned in one of the most impressive all-around performances against the Lady Vols in recent Texas history with 17 points, a game-high tying nine rebounds, three assists and a game-high tying five steals - in just 29 minutes of play.

The former Street and Smith Honorable Mention All-American has come off the bench in all three games for Texas. She is second in scoring (15.0), tied for first in rebounding (8.5 rpg) and second in steals (10) and assists (10) while playing 25.7 minutes per game. In her first three collegiate contests, Nash is five-for-11 from 3-point range (.455) and is 10-for-13 from the foul line.

Nash shares the Big 12 Co-Rookie of the Week honors with Oklahoma’s 5-9 guard Danielle Robinson, while Big 12 Player of the Week honors went to 5-9 junior guard Heather Ezell from Iowa State. Robinson had 14 points and four assists in a loss to Tennessee last week. Ezell tied the Big 12 and ISU single-game 3-pointers made record in a 99-45 win over Sacramento State on Nov. 18 when she hit 10 treys, making 10 of 15 shots from behind the arc to finish with 32 points.

Texas will return to action this weekend at the three-game, eight-team Jack in the Box Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The tourney runs from Friday through Sunday, Nov. 23-25, at the University of Hawaii. UT’s first-round opponent is Virginia (2-2) on Friday at 5:20 p.m. (Central). The game will be broadcast live on KVET Radio 1300 AM in Central Texas and via the internet at subscription-based Yahoo!Sports.
