• LEADING THE SCORING EFFORT ... Sophomore guard Chassidy Fussell has picked up where she left off last season by leading Texas in scoring over its first two contests. Fussell is averaging a team-best 16.0 ppg while seniors Yvonne Anderson and Ashleigh Fontenette are adding 15.5 and 12.5 ppg, respectively

• ANDERSON DISHING IT OUT ... Senior guard Yvonne Anderson dished out a game-high seven assists against No. 5/5 Stanford while committing just one turnover. Three nights later, she passed out six more assists against Southeastern Louisiana. Through two games, Anderson's assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.7-to-1.

• RECORD SETTING SENIOR ... Senior post Ashley Gayle tied Ellen Bayer's all-time Texas record of 289 career blocks when she swatted away five shots against Southeastern Louisiana. Gayle is also the school's single-season blocks leader after collecting 117 last season.

SERIES VS. ALCORN STATE
Sunday's contest marks the second-ever meeting between Texas and Alcorn State. The two teams last clashed on the hardwood in a New Year's Eve showdown in 1994 when Alcorn State made the 470-mile trek from just outside Lorman, Miss., to Austin where the Longhorns handed the Braves an 82-68 loss.

GOESTENKORS VS. ALCORN STATE
Sunday's contest marks the first meeting between head coach Gail Goestenkors and Alcorn State. Goestenkors is 4-0 all-time against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents, including wins over Southern (2006), Texas Southern (2009), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2010) and Mississippi Valley State (2010).

HORNS PICKED THIRD IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL
Texas was picked to finish third in the Big 12 Conference in a preseason vote of the league head coaches. The Longhorns have been picked to finish third or higher in the Big 12 eight times since the poll was first conducted prior to the 1997-98 season.

PEOPLES AND FUSSELL EARN PRESEASON BIG 12 HONORS
Guard Cassie Peoples was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshmen of the Year and sophomore guard Chassidy Fussell was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team in a vote of the league head coaches. Peoples and Fussell were among 35 of the nation's top 19-and-under athletes that accepted invitations to attend the 2011 USA Women's U19 World Championship Team Trials last summer.

A CHECK OF THE POLLS
UT received votes in the most recent Associated Press poll (Nov. 14) and is ranked No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today poll (Nov. 15). In addition to facing then No. 5/5 Stanford in its season opener, UT is scheduled to face six additional opponents in the regular season who are ranked in the preseason polls: No. 1/1 Baylor (Jan. 15 in Austin, Feb. 21 in Waco), No. 3/3 Tennessee (Dec. 4 in Knoxville), No. 6/6 Texas A&M (Jan. 11 in College Station, March 4 in Austin), No. 13/14 Oklahoma (Jan. 21 in Norman, Feb. 25 in Austin) and No. 25/RV Texas Tech (Jan. 28 in Lubbock, Feb. 15 in Austin).

LAST TIME OUT: VS. SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA (NOV. 14, 2011)
The Texas Longhorns held on and utilized timely runs to defeat a scrappy Southeastern Louisiana Lions squad. The Longhorns featured three double-digit scorers as they defeated the Lions, 73-65. Ashleigh Fontenette led the way with 19 points, and Yvonne Anderson added 18 and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Chassidy Fussell scored 15 to also pace the Longhorns. UT hit just five of its first 18 shots and held an 11-10 lead at the 11:50 mark of the first half. The Longhorns, though, were able to take advantage of their size with seven first-half blocks. UT went into the break with a 31-25 edge, led by Anderson's 10 points. The Longhorns stretched their lead to 12 with 5:45 remaining in the game, but the Lions would not go away quietly, cutting the lead to five with 2:47 to play after consecutive 3-pointers. The two teams went back and forth until 1:19, when the Lions cut the lead to three on a three-point play by freshman guard Elizabeth Styles. The Longhorns would prevail though with clutch free throw shooting and closed out the game going 5 of 7 from the line to seal the eight-point victory.

GOING THE DISTANCE
Three of Texas' starters are averaging 30+ minutes while also contributing double-figure scoring. Yvonne Anderson is playing a team-high 39 minutes per game while adding 15.5 ppg. Chassidy Fussell is leading Texas in scoring with 16.0 ppg in 34.0 mpg while Ashleigh Fontenette is playing 31.5 mpg and adding 12.5 ppg.

FONTENETTE EYEING 1,000
Senior guard Ashleigh Fontenette is closing in on the 1,000 career points mark entering the 2011-12 season. Through 101 games, she has amassed 963 points. Fontenette is on pace to become the 36th player in school history to accomplish the feat and the first since Earnesia Williams did the same in 2009-10.
