AUSTIN, Texas -- Two high school hoops standouts have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Gail Goestenkors announced Thursday. Lauren Flores (Houston, Texas) and Cokie Reed (Waco, Texas) will join the Longhorns for the 2009-10 season.
"We're excited to have both Lauren and Cokie next season. They are both versatile players who can play multiple positions, and they fit well into our running and pressing styles," Goestenkors said. "Lauren has a great first step and can shoot the three from deep. Cokie is powerful inside, has a good look from the outside and can dominate on the boards."
Flores (5-7), a guard from North Shore HS (Houston, Texas), has led the Lady Mustangs to an 88-17 record that includes two district titles and one appearance in the regional quarterfinals during her three-year career. She was named All-Greater Houston MVP of District 22-5A, all-region and all-state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Flores also earned all-state honors from the Texas Girls Coaches Association as a junior and was named to the second-team Houston Chronicle All-Greater Houston Team. In her junior season, Flores averaged 22.1 points, 6.1 assists and 7.1 rebounds per game.
Reed (6-5), a post from Midway HS (Waco, Texas), is ranked as the No. 5 high school prospect in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz.com. Reed averaged 16.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.6 blocks per game last year for Midway en route to reaching the Class 4A Region II final. She also was named the District 14-A MVP and a first-team Super CenTex honoree. This summer, Reed participated in the USA Basketball junior tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo.
No. 13/13 Texas opens the 2008-09 season with a home contest against Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 15, as part of the three-day World Vision Classic tournament. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center.
