Women's Basketball signs Davenport to National Letter of Intent

Nov. 10, 2011

AUSTIN, Texas -- High school hoops standout Empress Davenport has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Gail Goestenkors announced Thursday. Davenport (Duncanville, Texas) is ranked the 29th guard and 70th overall recruit in the class of 2012 by ESPN Hoopgurlz.

“Empress is a tremendous athlete and one of the best defensive players that I’ve seen in a long time,” Goestenkors said. “She loves to pressure the ball, push the ball in transition and her high energy will fit in well with our running and pressing style of play.”

The 5-7 shooting guard played a key role in DFW T-Jack Elite’s championship at the 17-under girls basketball 2011 NIKE NATIONALS. Additionally, Davenport’s club program won the highly regarded Boo Williams Nike Spring Invitational in April 2011.

As a junior at Duncanville HS, Davenport led the Panthers to a 14-0 league record (31-8 overall) while averaging 10.2 ppg, 2.7 spg, 2.5 apg and 2.3 rpg. She has increased her offensive output each season after averaging 5.7 ppg as a freshman and 7.1 during her sophomore campaign.

“In short, Empress has an outstanding work ethic and great leadership. She’ll be an asset to our program and commitment to ‘Texas toughness,’” added Goestenkors.

No. 24/20 Texas opens the 2011-12 season with a home contest against No. 5/5 Stanford on Friday, Nov. 11. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center and will air live on Longhorn Network and LonghornNetwork.com.
