Fussell named to Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 List

Nov. 9, 2012

LOS ANGELES -- University of Texas junior guard Chassidy Fussell has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Women’s Preseason Top 30 List, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Friday. The 2012-13 preseason list is based on last year’s individual performances and team records, and considered early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor.

The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national college women’s basketball media members.

Last season, Fussell was the Longhorns' leader in points (520, 16.3 per game), 3-point percentage (.378), free throw percentage and minutes (1,080, 33.8 per game). She recorded two 30-plus point scoring efforts and topped the 20-point mark 12 times on her way to becoming the 38th player in Texas history to reach the 1,000 career-points mark.

Following her sophomore campaign, Fussell became Texas' first All-Big 12 First Team selection in five years. The four-time Big 12 Player of the Week honoree ranked second in the conference in points scored (307, 17.1 per game), third in 3-point field goals made (46, 2.6 per game) and led the Big 12 in free throw percentage (.907, 49-of-54). Fussell's season free throw percentage (.905, 86-of-95) also ranked second nationally, and she sank her final 24 attempts of the season.

Fussell was also named Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and a ‘Wade Watch List’ contender in October.

The 37th annual Wooden Award ceremony will honor the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners the weekend of April 5-7, 2013.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball.  It is bestowed upon the nation’s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.  Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (’79), Michael Jordan (’84), Tim Duncan (’97), Candace Parker (’07 and ’08) and Maya Moore of Connecticut (’09 and ‘11).
