Carey tabbed one of top-five point guards by ESPN.com

BRISTOL, Conn. -- In another preseason recognition, Texas' 5-6 senior point guard Jamie Carey (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) was singled out by ESPN.com as one of the top five point guards in the nation entering the Division I season.

Carey, an All-America and National Player of the Year candidate for Jody Conradt's Longhorns, makes the short list of the nation's top playermakers along with 5-8 junior Erin Grant (Texas Tech), 5-9 senior Dionnah Jackson (Oklahoma), 5-3 senior Temeka Jackson (LSU) and 5-9 senior Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers).

Three of the five point guards can be found in the Big 12 Conference (Carey, Grant and Jackson). Johnson and LSU hail from the Southeastern Conference, while Pondexter plays in the Big East for Rutgers.

As noted in the story, the ESPN.com editors cited these five choices because "in the end, we knew we'd want these five running our offense before anybody else."

Carey, a First Team All-Big 12 pick and Academic All-American last year, finished her junior year with 10.7 ppg and hitting 41 percent of her 3-point shots. She led the 30-5 Longhorns to their second consecutive Big 12 regular season crown and to a NCAA Sweet 16 finish.

This year, Carey is a preseason candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy and Wooden Award National Player of the Year honors, and was a preseason First Team All-Big 12 pick.

The comments on Carey were are follows from ESPN basketball analyst Nancy Lieberman and ESPN.com contributing writer Mechelle Voepel:

"Very smart and efficient at running your offense. Her strength is her outside shot. The fact she can handle the ball and run the team is just a bonus."
-- Nancy Lieberman

"Gets the ball where it should go, is the emotional leader, plus can hit big perimeter shots."
-- Mechelle Voepel
