Last Exhibition Tonight for Longhorns
First-year head coach Gail Goestenkors and her Longhorns play the second of two exhibitions tonight, hosting the Houston Jaguars ... Goestenkors comes to UT following an illustrious 15-year run at Duke University ... She has registered an impressive 396-99 record - for a winning percentage of 80 percent which ranks No. 3 among all active Division I coaches.
UT opened exhibition play in fine fashion Thursday with a 101-50 victory over Trinity University ... Six Longhorns notched double-figure scoring in that contest, led by 18 points apiece from senior Erneisha Bailey and sophomore Brittainey Raven and a double-double (13 points, game-high 11 rebounds) by freshman Kathleen Nash.
A Look at the Houston Jaguars
The Houston Jaguars are a group of former collegiate players and ex-pro players who comprise two teams ... In earlier exhibition play, the Jaguars have lost to UT-San Antonio (92-61, Oct. 31), Baylor (99-57, Nov. 1) and to Texas Tech (100-82 on Sunday).
Next Up- Missouri State
Texas officially kicks off the Gail Goestenkors coaching era this Sunday, Nov. 11 when the Longhorns host Missouri State in their season opener at the Erwin Center (2 p.m. tip) ... Missouri State, formerly known as Southwest Missouri State, is coming off a 7-21 season after making seven NCAA Tournament showings in the previous nine years.
Texas No. 22 in AP, No. 24 in USA Today/ESPN Preseason Polls
Texas is ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll (media poll) released on November 3, and the Longhorns stand 24th in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Preseason Poll (see AP poll to the right) ... The USA Today/ESPN poll is conducted by the coaches ... Texas is one of four Big 12 schools receiving a preseason nod from both rankings, joining Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Baylor ... Texas will face six teams ranked in the AP preseason poll in regular season action - the three Big 12 squads and No. 1 Tennessee, No. 12 Arizona State and No. 25 DePaul.
Who's Back for the Longhorns
Nine letterwinners are back from last year's 18-14 team, including four players who saw significant starting time ... Although All-America post Tiffany Jackson took her team-highs of 16.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game to the WNBA, UT returns 70 percent of its' points, 67 percent of the rebounds, 80 percent of the assists and 69 percent of the steals from a year ago ... Named co-captains for the 2007-08 team are a duo of second-year players - 6-1 redshirt sophomore forward Earnesia Williams, last year's team MVP who averaged 9.5 ppg and 4.3 rpg, and 6-0 sophomore guard Brittainey Raven (7.9 ppg) ... Other key returnees include 5-9 senior guard Erneisha Bailey (7.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and 5-7 redshirt sophomore point guard Carla Cortijo (7.4 ppg, team-high 4.9 apg)... Last year, Cortijo was named to the Big 12 All-Rookie Team and Bailey was selected to the inaugural five-player Big 12 All-Defensive Team.
The Big 12 Preseason Poll
In the 2007-08 Big 12 Conference Preseason Poll, released on Oct. 12, Texas was picked to finish fourth by the league coaches ... Texas A&M (117 points) and Oklahoma (115), last year's co-champions, were picked one-two in the preseason voting ... Following them were Baylor (97), Texas (86), Oklahoma State (66) and Iowa State (64) to round out the top six teams ... The rest of the rankings: Nebraska (56), Kansas State and Texas Tech (tied for eighth, 54 points apiece), Kansas (43), Colorado (29) and Missouri (11).
