IRVING, Texas -- The University of Texas Women's Basketball team is picked to finish second in the Big 12 Conference for the second consecutive season in a preseason vote of the league coaches, the conference office announced Thursday. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite to win the regular-season conference crown with 109 points and five first-place votes. Texas and Kansas tied for second with 106 points and three first-place votes each, while fourth-ranked Texas A&M received one first-place vote and 87 points.
UT returns eight letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's squad that made its second-consecutive and 23rd overall appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Longhorns have been picked to finish second or higher in the Big 12 five times since 1997.
Oklahoma, last year's regular season champion, placed fifth, followed by Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Colorado and Missouri.
Big 12 head coaches and select student-athletes will convene in Kansas City on Oct. 21 for the annual Big 12 Women's Basketball Media Day. Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium will serve as the site of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship Thursday-Sunday, March 11-14.
Texas will tip off the 2009-10 regular season on Friday, Nov. 13, against UTSA at 7 p.m. in the Frank Erwin Center.
