Longhorns pick up top rankings, Jackson earns preseason All-America honors

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas women's basketball team has picked up two more preseason national top five rankings, as Athlon Magazine selected the Longhorns as the No. 1 team in its Preseason Top 25 and Lindy's Sports Annuals chose UT as the fifth-best team in its polls.

Texas is coming off a 30-5 season a year ago and will be headlined by three preseason National Player of the Year candidates in 5-6 senior guard Jamie Carey (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS), 6-2 senior forward Heather Schreiber (Windthorst, Texas/Windthorst HS) and 6-3 sophomore forward Tiffany Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Duncanville HS).

Jackson was selected as a preseason All-America by both Athlon and Lindy's. Athlon named Jackson, last year's National Freshman of the Year (as chosen by ESPN.com and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association), one of five First Team Preseason All-Americans. Lindy's chose Jackson (13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game a year ago) as a Third Team All-American, ranking her among the top 15 players in the nation.

Jackson, Schreiber (12.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 50 3-pointers last year) and Carey (10.7 ppg, team-high 66 3-pointers) were all selected as Preseason Wooden All-Americans in August. Texas is the ONLY school in the nation to have three National Player of the Year Candidates entering 2004-05. The Longhorn trio is up for the John R. Wooden and State Farm Wade Trophy National Player of the Year awards.

Earlier in September, the Longhorns were picked No. 5 nationally in SLAM Magazine's preseason top 10 rankings.

The Longhorns are the two-time defending Big 12 regular season champions (winning that title outright in 2003 and sharing it last year) and have advanced to three consecutive trips to the NCAA Sweet 16, with the 2003 Women's Final Four showing sandwiched in between two Sweet 16 appearances. Texas ended last year No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25 and 10th in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25.

The 2004-05 USA Today/ESPN and Associated Press Preseason Top 25 preseason polls will be released in early November.
