Countdown to the Women's Basketball season: The numbers game

Is there a rhyme or reason for the uniform numbers that the basketball team will be wearing this year? Check here to see the "what" and "why", and see what numbers the seven new freshmen will be sporting this season.

Question: Why I wear the uniform number I do...

#00 – Earnesia Williams (6-1 Fr. G): To me, #00 stands out and is different. I’ve been wearing it since fifth grade.

#1- Tamra Cobbins (5-4 Sr. G): Because Nina stole mine (No. 22) our freshman year, so I took number one instead!

#3- Carla Cortijo (5-7 Fr. G): I wear No. 3 because that’s the number my Dad (Angel Cortijo) used to wear in high school.

#4 – Erika Arriaran (5-10 Fr. G): My Dad (Jim Arriaran) raised me with his role model, baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, always in mind, and Gehrig wore this number.

#12- Kalee Carey (6-5 Jr. P): Because my Dad (Darrell Carey) coached AAU boy’s basketball when I was younger, and my favorite player was Shane Anderson and he wore #12.

#20- Erneisha Bailey (5-9 So. G): It (#20) was the first number I ever wore and I’ve kept it.

#22- Nina Norman (5-6 Sr. G): I started wearing #22 a long time ago and have kept it.

#23- Coco Reed (5-11 Sr. G): I grew up watching Michael Jordan and wanted to be just like him, so that’s why I wear #23.

#33- Tiffany Jackson (6-3 Jr. F): My number (33) symbolizes death, burial and resurrection = 3; and, for three days, Jesus laid in the tomb.

#34 – Crystal Boyd (5-11 Fr. F): I wore #12 ever since I was six years old; then, in 10th grade (my first year of varsity basketball), I had to change my number because #12 was too small! So, I just picked #34…then I later discovered that Paul Pierce and Shaq had that number, so I just considered myself as a combo of them !!

#35- Ashley Lindsey (6-4 Fr. P): It (#35) was my high school number.

#43- Aubry Cook (6-3 Fr. P): The #43 was my Dad’s number when he played (note: the late Greg Cook starred at LSU, then went on to play for the New York Knicks and later in the European basketball leagues).

#44- Katrina Robinson (6-2 So. F): My sister (WNBA player Ashley Robinson) picked this as my number during my freshman year in high school.

#50- Marianna (Mari) Mergerson (6-3 Fr. P): I wear No. 50 because my mom (Loretta) wore it when she played basketball at Midwestern State (1980-81).

#51- Daria Mieloszynska (6-2 Sr. F): The No. 6 was always my number playing basketball in Poland, but you cannot have international numbers here in the USA. When I came here, I couldn’t have No. 6, so instead I picked 51 (5+1=6)!!
