Sept. 18, 2012
ATLANTA -- Texas Women's Basketball junior guard Chassidy Fussell has been named to the 2012-13 preseason "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the prestigious award, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Tuesday. Fussell became the sixth UT player and first since 2007 to earn a spot on the 2012 All-Big 12 First Team, joining the likes of Edwina Brown (1999, 2000), Stacy Stephens (2003, 2004), Heather Schreiber (2003), Jamie Carey (2004, 2005) and Tiffany Jackson (2005, 2006, 2007). Fussell was the second-leading scorer in the Big 12 Conference last season with 17.1 ppg. She recorded two 30-plus points efforts during her sophomore campaign, topped the 20-point mark 12 times and reached double-figure scoring in 26 of Texas' 32 games. Fussell was the Longhorns' leader in point (520, 16.3 per game), 3-point percentage (.378), free throw percentage (.905) and minutes (1,080, 33.8 per game). Additionally, Fussell finished the season tied for second nationally in free throw percentage (.905, 86-of-95) and connected on her final 24 free throw attempts of the year. Now in its 36th year, the State Farm Wade Trophy is named in honor of the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade. Regarded as "The Heisman of Women's Basketball," the award is presented annually to the NCAA® Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA. The preseason list is composed of top NCAA Division I women's basketball players who best embody Wade's spirit from 18 institutions and eight conferences. A committee of coaches, administrators and media from across the United States compiled the list using the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins, Delaware's Elena Della Donne and Georgetown's Sugar Rodgers join 2012 State Farm Wade Trophy winner Brittney Griner on the preseason list for the third straight year.
