FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Former Texas All-America basketball standout Stacy Stephens has been named director of women’s basketball operations at Colorado State University. The announcement was made August 17th by CSU women’s basketball head coach Jen Warden.
Stephens helped the Longhorns to a berth in the 2003 Final Four and to two regular season and one tournament championship in the Big 12 Conference while playing from 2000-04. After finishing her UT career where she became the third Longhorn to collect 1,000-plus points and 1,000-plus rebounds, Stephens played for the WNBA's Detroit Shock in 2004. She averaged 12.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game during her Texas career.
Stephens will handle scheduling, team travel, equipment and other duties for CSU ‘s basketball program.
Warden is in her second year as CSU head coach. Colorado State, 9-20 last year, plays in the Mountain West Conference.
"I am so excited to add Stacy to our staff," Warden said. "She had a great career in college and was good enough to play in the WNBA. She adds a great deal of passion and energy to our staff."
When Stephens was deciding where to play her collegiate basketball, her final two decisions, ironically, came down to Texas and the University of Colorado, where Warden served as an assistant coach at that time.
"The drawback of CU was that it was so far from home," said Stephens, a native of Winnsboro, Texas, in a statement to the Fort Collins local newspaper, The Coloradoan. "I've always loved Coach Warden, and I'm really excited to be part of this great staff. I can't wait to get started."
At Texas, Stephens was an Associated Press and U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-American and a finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith Award (as national player of the year) during her junior and senior seasons. As a junior and senior, she claimed Big 12 First Team honors as well.
Stephens is the second person added to Warden's staff since the conclusion of her first season, joining new assistant coach Linda Lappe (former Colorado player). Heath Alexander and Randi Wirt are entering their second season with Warden as assistants.
