'Tex' message: Crystal Boyd

Periodically during the off-season, the returning Longhorns basketball players will keep everyone up-to-date on their off-court activities, training and workout, summer academic work and general thoughts as they get ready to take to the court next fall. Checking in this week with her "Tex Message" is sophomore shooting guard Crystal Boyd, who has spent her summer focused on workouts, extending her game and composing music in her "San Jac Studios".

Hey, everyone!

It's my turn to talk about the summer and what we are doing.

First, we all are very motivated. After being 13-and-15, we are unhappy, and there is so much to prove to ourselves and everyone. We could have won more, but those injuries hurt, and truthfully, we freshman were not big contributors. It was a wake-up call for all of us.

I really think we've all grown up and matured a bit. EVERYONE is working harder. Know that the whole team environment has changed. There are good vibes and all of us are getting closer with good chemistry and attitudes.

This summer, all I do is classes, basketball and my music (more about that later!). I am working on my mid-range game, driving more and not settling for jump shots. In the weight room, I am getting really strong! That's my goal - strength in my upper body, especially. I am trying to change my diet - that is HARD - and drink more water and Gatorade.

I am thinking about majoring in RTF - to be a Radio, TV and Film major. In my first RTF class, I made an "A" in it. My goal is to be a music producer/songwriter.

In my spare time, I sit in the "San Jac Studios" -- that's what I call my room in the San Jacinto dorm! I have a MIDI keyboard and my laptop, and am about to buy a microphone. Watch out, hallmates!

I spend free time writing and composing music, mostly R&B and alternative songs. I am influenced by Kanye (West), Missy Elliott, India.Arie and Floetry, a British hip-hop, soul, R&B female duo.

I've been playing a keyboard since I was in fourth grade when I was in a little school band. It was an elite jazz band and I played the bass keyboard. I started by playing by ear for fun.

I also was in the choir and was our alto section leader. With Ms. Tamra (Cobbins) graduating, I think I will have to take over the comedy on the bus and the locker room singing! I definitely am working on my dancing and some new moves... Also, Tamra's web video show - 1 on One - will need to continue with new hosts and a new name. Look for us sophomores to take over the show this year ... We are working on the title, maybe something with "LHTV" in it for "Longhorn TV". It's a work-in-progress - watch for us this fall!

That's all. Check back later with another of my teammates and get ready for a great season!

Hook 'Em !

Crystal
