Women's Basketball announces 2009-10 schedule
July 21, 2009 “In my 17 years of coaching, this is one of the most difficult schedules I have ever had,” Texas head coach Gail Goestenkors said. “The schedule will be both very challenging and exciting, but at the same time we have accomplished our goal of playing teams from as many power conferences as possible. We also will be competing against quality programs in the state of Texas, and as a result, this schedule is very well-rounded.” The Horns will tip off the regular season by hosting in-state opponent and 2009 NCAA participant UTSA (Nov. 13) before facing defending National Champion UConn (Nov. 17) as part of the ESPNU Road to the Championship doubleheader at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. UT will return home to face North Texas (Nov. 20) before traveling to the Caribbean for the 2009 Paradise Jam Tourney at The University of the Virgin Islands over the Thanksgiving holiday. Texas will see action against Mississippi State (Nov. 26), Southern California (Nov. 27) and Rutgers (Nov. 28) in consecutive days. December will feature a home contest against Oral Roberts (Dec. 1) and a trip to Knoxville to face perennial power Tennessee (Dec. 6). The Horns then play host to SEC foe Ole Miss (Dec. 16) and Texas Southern (Dec. 20). Texas will then travel to the Sunshine State for The University of Miami Holiday Tournament (Dec. 28-29), in a four-team tournament that includes Quinnipiac, Central Michigan and host Miami. The Horns’ final tune up for the 2010 Big 12 Conference season includes home games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Jan. 2) and Texas-Arlington (Jan. 5). “Texas will be as battle-tested as possible because of our non-conference schedule,” Goestenkors added. “As a staff, we have had two years now of scouting our opponents and the coaches in our league, and I think there is more of a level of comfort because we feel good about the knowledge that we have of the teams, the players, the coaches and their tendencies.” UT welcomes 2009 NCAA squads Texas A&M (Jan. 9), Iowa State (Jan. 23), Baylor (Jan. 31), Kansas State (Feb. 17) and Oklahoma (Feb. 27) to the Frank Erwin Center this season, and WNIT participant Oklahoma State (Jan. 20). Missouri will mark UT’s final regular-season home opponent on March 3. The Horns’ road league schedule takes them to Nebraska (Jan. 12), Texas Tech (Jan. 16), Oklahoma (Feb. 3), Colorado (Feb. 10), Kansas (Feb. 13), Texas A&M (Feb. 20), Oklahoma State (Feb. 24) and Baylor (March 7). “The Big 12 is going to be better than ever this year. Some of the teams that have been ‘dark horses’ in the past are going to really be on the rise this year,” Goestenkors said. The 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship will be contested Thursday-Sunday, March 11-14, at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The format will once again feature first-round action on Thursday followed by quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the Championship on Sunday. Game times will be released at a later date, along with selected televised contests.
