Why Texas by Ron Hughey
June 29, 2010
One of the first things that one of my friends told me about coming to Texas is that you have to learn the Hook `Em, you have to learn the signs and you have understand that you're coming to God's country. I am definitely learning the signals and the signs of the Texas pride. I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. Basketball became the thing in my life around the seventh grade. I was basketball, football oriented. I ended up playing in college, my first year at South Carolina State, playing both. After that, they asked me to choose one. So I chose football, but basketball has always been my love. Coaching, recruiting, all of it is really about communication. I love it, just because it's who I am. Being from the South, where you wake up in the morning and you say good morning, and you shake people's hands and you look them in the eye and you say, "You have a great day today." I'm going to be understanding. I'm not a screamer and a yeller, I'm a teacher. I'm a show person, not a do person. I'm not going to tell you to do the things that I can't do. I'm going to show you those things and then we'll go from there. I'm in the action every day. You'll get a chance to see me challenge players on the court. I do an assortment of things. So many things you break down into pieces and hopefully they can put it together, and be great. It's really about seeing the kids grow -- every single day, just a little bit of growth. I'll bring the energy and passion every single day. I learned a long time ago that your outlook determines your outcome. It's just that simple. Every day is going at it 110 percent, never taking a day off. Putting the time in, and working with the girls and understanding that good goes with good and great goes with great. So why not be great?
