Washington named Women's Basketball assistant coach

May 1, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Women’s Basketball head coach Karen Aston completed her staff Tuesday with the hiring of George Washington as assistant coach. Washington’s appointment is effective beginning May 2.

“I am thrilled to announce the addition of George Washington to our Texas Women’s Basketball staff,” Aston said. “We wanted to add a different element, in the sense of someone who has dealt with young people on a daily basis during their high school years. George is a teacher, foremost, which I love most about him. He also is a passionate, energetic coach who shares our vision for Texas.”

Prior to joining the Texas staff, Washington served as an assistant coach at Westbury Christian High School in Houston while also teaching computer science, health and physical education classes. The Wildcats made four-straight Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 4A State Championship appearances (2009-12). Westbury Christian earned national rankings as the No. 8 team during the 2008-09 season and No. 9 in 2010-11. During his tenure, the Wildcats compiled a 140-16 (.897) overall record.

On the court, Washington was responsible for designing and organizing basketball practice plans while simultaneously coordinating the strength and conditioning program. Washington also oversaw all scouting reports.

Before his tenure at Westbury Christian, Washington served as the Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach at St. Thomas Episcopal in Houston. He oversaw 17 sports programs as the school’s athletic director during the 2004-05 season while also leading the girls’ basketball team to the TAPPS 4A State Semifinals and a 27-5 overall record.

Washington graduated from Abilene Christian in May 2000 with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Exercise and Sports Science. A member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Washington is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and formerly worked as a sports performance specialist at Memorial Hermann Sports Performance in Houston. From 2002-04, he designed and administered sports-specific training programs for NBA and NFL players.

“George has always been involved throughout his career in skills training and that has become a staple of any program bearing his assistance,” Aston added.

Washington’s coaching involvement has also included positions with the DFW Elite (2009-12), Houston Heat Girls Basketball (2003-12) and CyFair Texans Basketball (2006-09).
