Four from Women's Basketball earn spots on All-Big 12 teams

March 9, 2009

IRVING, Texas -- Four University of Texas players earned spots on the 2008-09 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Women’s Basketball teams, the league office announced Monday.  The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Junior guard Brittainey Raven was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team for the second-consecutive year, and freshman guard Ashleigh Fontenette earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.  Senior guard Carla Cortijo picked up her second All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolade in as many seasons, and sophomore guard Kathleen Nash earned her first.

Raven leads the Longhorns and ranks 15th in the Big 12 in scoring (12.3 ppg).  The Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection led UT in scoring in six league contests, including a career-high 31-point performance at Missouri (Feb. 24).

Fontenette, a two-time Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman of Week honoree, started in 11 of Texas’ 16 Big 12 contests and averaged 8.3 ppg and 3.4 rpg.  She ranked second in scoring among league rookies, and third in rebounding.  Additionally, Fontenette finished second in her class with a 43.5 percent mark from three-point range and 1.50 steals per game.

Cortijo, a three-year starter at point guard for the Longhorns, finished fourth in the league with 4.1 apg while recording the fourth-best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4).

Nash led the Longhorns in league contests with 24 three-point field goals and 6.8 rpg.  She also co-led Texas with two double-double performances, including a 20-point, 14-rebound effort at Texas Tech (Jan. 10) and 11 points, 10 rebounds at Baylor (Feb. 1).  She ranks ninth in the league with 1.5 three-point field goals per game, 12th with 6.8 rpg and 29th with 10.1 ppg.
