Carey and Schreiber chosen for WBCA All-Star Challenge
ATLANTA -- University of Texas senior basketball standouts 5-6 guard Jamie Carey (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) and 6-2 forward Heather Schreiber (Windthorst, Texas/Windthorst HS) have been selected by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to its all-star line-up for the 2005 WBCA All-Star Challenge Game - an annual exhibition featuring the top senior talent in the nation which takes place on NCAA Women's Final Four weekend in the Final Four city. This year, on Saturday, April 2, the top 20 senior collegiate players in women's basketball will showcase their talents in Indianapolis, Indiana at the University of Indianapolis' Nicoson Hall as part of the All-Star Challenge. The WBCA All-Star Challenge roster of 20 may alter if any of selected players' teams are participating in the NCAA Women's Final Four. In that case, alternates will be selected based on voting results. Carey and Schreiber are two of the top 17 Division I seniors, as voted on by Division I WBCA-member head coaches. The remaining three players are the top senior vote getters in the State Farm/WBCA Player of the Year ballots. They are selected from the NCAA Division II, III and NAIA levels. Those names will be released at a later date. Carey and Schreiber, both All-Big 12 picks the last three years, become the third and fourth Texas players to receive an invitation to play in this elite WBCA All-Star Challenge. They follow former Longhorn All-American guard Edwina Brown (2000) and All-American post Stacy Stephens (2004). This event tips off the 24th Annual WBCA National Convention, which takes place in Indianapolis at the site of the NCAA Women's Final Four®. The WBCA All-Star Challenge game will be the second game of a doubleheader event during the "WBCA Night of All-Stars." The WBCA High School All-America Game, presented by Nike, begins at 4:30 p.m. (Central). Two of Texas' signees for next year will play in that All-America Game: 5-10 Erika Arriaran (Norco, Calif./Norco HS), the 2005 State Farm/WBCA National High School Player of the Year, and 6-1 Earnesia Williams ( Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS). "The WBCA All-Star Challenge has become one of the most anticipated events surrounding our national convention and the NCAA Final Four," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "This year's event is no exception; the Class of 2005 will be represented very well in this year's game." Past stars of the WBCA All-Star Challenge include: Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury); Alana Beard (Washington Mystics); Cheryl Ford (Detroit Shock); Chantelle Anderson (Sacramento Monarchs); Semeka Randall (San Antonio Silver Stars); Marie Ferdinand (San Antonio Silver Stars); Chamique Holdsclaw (Washington Mystics); Ticha Penicherio (Sacramento Monarchs); Kelly Miller (Indiana Fever); Coco Miller, Murriel Page (Washington Mystics), and many more stars of the WNBA.
