Three Longhorns selected to Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team
DALLAS -- A trio of Texas women's basketball student-athletes were named to the 2007-08 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, the league office announced Wednesday. Longhorn 6-2 forward Kristen Nash was selected First Team Academic All-Big 12, while 5-7 guard Carla Cortijo and 6-1 forward Earnesia Williams were named to the Second Team. Nash (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) is a redshirt sophomore athletically and a sophomore academically who is majoring in education. Cortijo (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Bellaire [TX] HS) and Williams (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS) are juniors academically and have sophomore athletic status. Cortijo is a kinesiology major and Williams is majoring in youth and community studies. This is the second consecutive year that Cortijo has been selected to the elite Academic All-Big 12 Team and it is the first such honor for Nash and Williams. A total of 37 women's basketball players were named to this year's Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's basketball academic all-league team consisted of 27 first team members combined with 10 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Texas, standing 18-11 on the season and 6-9 in the Big 12, closes out its regular season Wednesday evening with a home contest (7 p.m. Central) against conference opponent Texas Tech. Next, all conference teams will play at the 2008 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship. The Championship returns to Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium for the eighth time in conference history and takes place on March 11-13 & 15.
