Jamie Carey named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team

WALTHAM, Mass. -- University of Texas women's basketball 5-8 senior guard Jamie Carey (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women's basketball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and announced Thursday. This is the second consecutive year that Carey has been named to the prestigious Academic All-America Third Team. Only 15 Division I players (five per team) were named Academic All-America from the 324 Division I schools which compete in women's basketball.

Carey completed her undergraduate degree in sociology/social work in December of 2004, and since then has been enrolled in UT's graduate school, pursuing her master's degree in sport management. A finalist for State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith National Player of the Year honors on the court, Jamie currently is a third-semester UT graduate student and carries a grade-point average of 3.33 (4.0 scale). As an undergraduate, she held a 3.58 GPA.

Carey also is a two-time Big 12 Academic All-Big 12 First Team performer (in 2004 and 2005).

Carey is second in scoring for head coach Jody Conradt's Longhorns (20-7), who rank No. 11 nationally this week. She is averaging 12.0 ppg and leads the squad in 3-point shooting, hitting at a .429 clip from long range (60-140). Carey also is second in assists (63, 2.3 apg), steals (44, 1.6 spg) and free throw shooting (.787, 37-47). She ranks No. 14 nationally in 3-point percentage among all Division I players. In the Texas record books, she currently is tied with fellow senior Heather Schreiber for No. 2 honors in Longhorn career 3-pointers made (183 apiece). She also has scored 1,340 career points.

Texas has concluded its regular season action, finishing 13-3 in Big 12 play. UT awaits word on the seedings and pairings for the 2005 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Tournament, which will be announced late Thursday evening.

ESPN The Magazine is in its first year as the exclusive corporate sponsor of the Academic All-America program. For more information on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams program, go to CoSIDA.com.
