Texas is No. 2 seed in the 2005 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament
DALLAS -- The University of Texas women's basketball team will be the No. 2 seed at the upcoming 2005 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship which takes place Tuesday-Thursday and Friday, March 8-10 and 12, at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. Texas, 20-7 overall with a 13-3 finish in the Big 12, gains the No. 2 seed by virtue of No. 1 seed Baylor's 79-69 victory over No. 3 seed Texas Tech Thursday night in the regular season finale for the Big 12. Baylor (24-3, 14-2) won the regular season crown, with Texas placing second. The Longhorns had won the last two Big 12 regular season championships, winning outright in 2003 before being co-champs with Kansas State last year. The top four teams in the 12-team league receive first-round byes and will play in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Texas' quarterfinal opponent will be the winner of Tuesday's first-round game between No. 7 seed Oklahoma (15-11) and No. 10 Texas A&M (14-13). Texas finished its regular season on Wednesday, defeating Texas A&M 69-57 in College Station. The Longhorns enter the Big 12 tourney with a seven-game win streak. This year, Texas swept both Oklahoma and Texas A&M in league action. Texas was the No. 1 seed in the 2003 and 2004 Big 12 tourneys, winning their first tourney crown in 2003 while finishing as runner-up a year ago. At Dallas' Reunion Arena last year, No. 6 seed Oklahoma defeated UT, 66-47, in Texas' third Big 12 tournament final appearance. The other two byes will go to No. 3 seed Kansas State and No. 4 Texas Tech. Kansas State (21-6), Texas Tech (21-6), and Iowa State (22-5) all finished with identical 12-4 marks in league play. Applying the Big 12 Conference's tournament tie-breaker procedure, KSU earned the third seed, Texas Tech the No. 4 seed and Iowa State is the fifth seed. All quarterfinal and semifinal games as well as the championship contest on Saturday will be televised live on FSN (FOX Sports Net). The winner of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament gains the league's automatic berth to the 2005 NCAA Championship. NCAA Selection Sunday will take place on Sunday, March 13 (4 p.m. Central) on ESPN.
