Carey and Reed named to Academic All-Big 12 team
DALLAS -- The Big 12 Conference announced its 2005 Big 12 Conference announced its 2005 Women's Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Team Wednesday, and University of Texas 5-6 senior guard Jamie Carey (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS/Stanford University) and 5-11 junior redshirt guard Coco Reed (Houston, Texas/Jersey Village HS) were selected as academic standouts. Carey was one of 21 repeat honorees, as she was a First Team All-Academic selection last year as well. Carey, a graduate student studying sport management, is a ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America finalist this year. Last year, she earned Academic All-America Third Team honors, being one of only 45 Division I players from across all 320-plus teams to receive the elite honor. Reed, an education major, receives her first Big 12 All-Academic team honor. Big 12 LogoNominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the women's basketball academic all-league squad consisted of 38 first team members combined with nine on the second team. First team members include those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. The student-athletes on the squads will participate in the 2005 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, scheduled for Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, March 8-10 and 12 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Prior to the Phillips 66 Big 12 tourney, Texas (19-7 overall, 12-3 in Big 12) closes out its regular season on Wednesday, March 2 with a 7 p.m. Contest (CST) at Texas A&M in College Station.
