ATLANTA -- University of Texas Women’s Basketball signee Cokie Reed (Waco, Texas) has been named one of five finalists for the 2009 Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year award, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club today. The finalists were determined by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists and administrators from around the country. Criteria is based on player performances this season.
Reed, a 2009 McDonald’s All-American and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) High School All-American, is averaging 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds for Midway HS during her senior campaign. The two-time District 14-A MVP led the Midway Pantherettes to a perfect 14-0 mark in District 16-4A.
The 6-foot-5 post is ranked as the No. 5 high school prospect in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz.com. She averaged 16.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.6 blocks per game last season for Midway en route to reaching the Class 4A Region II final.
Winners will be determined in early March and will be recognized at the annual Naismith Awards banquet March 23, 2009 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta.
