Women's Basketball signee Gayle selected to play in two All-America games

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- University of Texas women's basketball signee Ashley Gayle was selected to her second national All-America Team in the last five days on Tuesday when she was chosen to participate in the seventh annual The McDonald's All American Basketball Game. The announcement of the boys and girls McDonald's All-America Teams was made by the Games national selection committee.

Gayle, a 6-4 post from Las Vegas, Nevada and Bishop Gorman High School who plays on the nationally-renown West Coast Elite AAU squad, is the only signee from a Big 12 Conference school selected to the prestigious McDonald's All-America Team.

The McDonald's All-American Games will be played on Wednesday, March 26 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The girls game starts at 6 p.m. (Central) on ESPNU and the 31st annual boys game follows at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Gayle also will play in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) High School All-American Game presented by Nike in April. That WBCA senior all-star game takes place on Saturday, April 5 in Tampa, Florida, in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four (see release, below).

Gayle becomes the sixth Longhorn recruit to be named to the elite McDonald's All-America Team in the last six years. She follows current WNBA forward Tiffany Jackson (a 2003 selection), 2005 selections guards Erika Arriaran and Crystal Boyd along with forward Earnesia Williams, and 2006 McDonald's All-America guard Brittainey Raven.

Gayle also is the 13th student-athlete recruited and signed by UT head coach Gail Goestenkors to be selected to the elite McDonald's All-America Team in the last seven years. The other 12 players were Goestenkors' Duke University players who were named McDonald All-Americans from 2002-07.

This year, the 48 McDonald's All-America players (24 girls, 24 boys) were selected from 2,500 nominees by a committee of basketball experts. They were chosen not only for their on-court skills, but for their performances off the court as well.

Gayle, who signed with Texas during the November early signing period, has led Bishop Gorman to the Nevada state tournament which begins on Feb. 21.

Proceeds from the 2008 McDonald's All American High School Basketball Games will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC(R)) of Eastern Wisconsin and its Ronald McDonald House(R) program. Millions of dollars have been raised since the first Game was played in 1978.

"The McDonald's All American Games is the premiere prep showcase for the top talent in college and pro basketball," said Alonzo Mourning, captain of the new McDonald's All American Advisory Council. "Not only will these young stars be added to the list of the best basketball players of all time, but they will aid in raising money for a very important cause."

Women's Basketball signee Ashley Gayle to play in WBCA High School All-America Game

ATLANTA -- Ashley Gayle, a 6-4 post from Las Vegas, Nev. and high school basketball power Bishop Gorman High School who signed a national letter of intent to play at Texas this past November, was one the nations' top 20 senior basketball standouts selected Friday to participate in the 2008 WBCA High School All-America Game presented by Nike.

This will be the 17th annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) High School All-America Game.

The players who have been chosen will be divided into two teams of ten players. The college-style regulation game is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, at the University of South Florida's Sun Dome in Tampa Bay, Fla. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. (ET). This highly-anticipated event is part of the WBCA National Convention, which takes place at the site of the NCAA® Women's Final Four®.

Gayle, who signed with Texas during the November early signing period, has led Bishop Gorman to the Nevada state tournament which begins on Feb. 21.

On Friday, February 15, Gayle posted a triple-double in leading her 27-4 Bishop Gorman squad to the Sunset Regional championship over rival Centennial, 67-39. The 6-4 post collected 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks. Earlier this month, Gayle was named Nevada's Southwest Division co-Most Valuable Player in leading Bishop Gorman to a undefeated (12-0) record and the division title.

Gayle is a high school All-American who has played for USA Basketball as well.

On the current Texas roster are five players who also participated in recent WBCA High School All-America Games - senior guard Erneisha Bailey (in 2004), junior guard Erika Arriaran (2005), redshirt sophomore forward Earnesia Williams (2005), junior guard Crystal Boyd (2005) and sophomore guard Brittainey Raven (2006).

"The WBCA High School All-America Team committee has selected 20 of the most talented seniors for this season's lineup," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "These young women represent the future of the college game and beyond, and the WBCA could not be more proud to play host to our 17th High School All-America Game presented by Nike."

"Being selected as a member of the WBCA High School All-America Team is quite an honor," Gary Glasscock, Chairman of the High School All-America Game Selection Committee, said. "Nine selection committee members choose the team after weeks of study, phone calls, compiling data and weekly conference calls in discussion of players throughout the country."

The Nike Co-Captains are the WNBA Minnesota Lynx's Lindsey Harding and Indiana Fever's Tamika Catchings. Harding was a WBCA All-American last year, and Catchings is a four-time WBCA All-American (1996-99) and WBCA High School All-American (1997). Harding and Catchings will be available for an autograph session at 4:00 p.m. (ET) at the Sun Dome. The WBCA High School All-American Team will be available for autographs following the game.

Reserved seats are available for $15 and can be purchased by calling 813-287-8844.
