Feb. 15, 2011
Five University of Texas Women's Basketball players have earned a spot on the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, the league office announced Tuesday. Seniors Sarah Lancaster and Kathleen Nash as well as juniors Yvonne Anderson, Ashleigh Fontenette and Ashley Gayle were each named to the First Team. Lancaster's, a four-year standout on the Texas Women's Tennis team, was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 Women's Tennis First-Team (2008-10) honoree. This marks Kathleen Nash's third consecutive selection to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, as she was also a first-team choice as a sophomore and junior. Anderson, Fontenette and Gayle earned their second career honors, as each was a first-team choice in 2009-10. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the academic all-league women's basketball team consisted of 30 first-team members and 16 second-team members. First team members honor those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team honorees are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify for the team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
