Women's Basketball's Fussell tabbed Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week
Feb. 7, 2011
IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas freshman guard Chassidy Fussell (Troy, Tenn.) has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week for games contested Jan. 31-Feb. 6, the conference announced Monday. The award is chosen by a panel of media covering Big 12 women’s basketball. It is the third career honor for Fussell who was previously named the league freshman of the week on Nov. 22 and Jan. 3. Fussell scored 25 points, one shy of her career-high, in Texas’ 80-68 win over Kansas on Saturday. It marked her 20th double-digit scoring effort of the season, which ties for sixth on UT’s list by a freshman. She led the Longhorns in scoring for the 10th time and tied for the lead in rebounding with seven in the win. She is the first Longhorn to record five-consecutive 20-plus scoring efforts since Tiffany Jackson had a six-game streak during the 2006-07 campaign. The 5-10 guard has reached the 20-point mark 12 times this season, including in all but one Big 12 game. Fussell currently has 381 points which is the ninth-most by a UT freshman, and has scored in double figures in all but one game. The Longhorns begin a two-game conference road swing on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Kansas State. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central in Manhattan, Kan.
