Coach G's novel plan: Kristen Nash

Feb. 5, 2010

Every year, Texas Women's Basketball coach Gail Goestenkors hand-picks reading selections for all of her student-athletes. Goestenkors carefully connects each one to the individual, choosing books that can educate and inspire -- and impact the Longhorns on the court, and in life.

Throughout the season, TexasSports.com will visit with Goestenkors and the Longhorns to learn about the books that were read, and what everyone learned through the process.

Kristen Nash
I read The Right to Lead, which taught me more than just leadership. It taught me about being the kind of leader other people want to follow, and that's really important in basketball.

In reading this, I learned that good leaders are also good followers, and I think that's all about buying into the bigger picture and understanding our collective goals. And at Texas, that's always championships.

This year, I've really focused on just playing as hard as I can, all the time, and executing the tasks the coaches give me. Whether that's defense or rebounding or scoring, I want to do it. Leaders who earn the right to lead give their all in what they do. They bring not only skill and talents, but also great passion and hard work.

Vince Lombardi says it best, "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender."

Gail Goestenkors
Kristen is one of our leaders, and she's a leader by example because of her work ethic and her commitment to this program. I want this to be her best season, and for all of her dreams to come true!

She's always been one of our hardest workers. Kristen is fierce and relentless, and she hustles for every ball. As coaches and teammates, we've always appreciated that, and I'm happy that it's finally paying off for her.
