Women's Basketball plans special activities in recognition of National Girls and Women in Sports Day
Feb. 2, 2010 AUSTIN, Texas -- Since opening our doors 36 years ago, University of Texas Women's Athletics has grown and graduated a generation of Longhorns who have honored the burnt orange in competition and in life. No other school can claim more than our 40 Big 12 Conference championships. All told, we've won 26 national championships in seven sports, and since 1987, we have celebrated 12 female student-athletes who have earned prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Our Women's Basketball team hosts Texas Tech on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m., and on that day, we will also recognize National Girls and Women in Sports Day. UT Athletics will host the "UT and ME" expo in an effort to continue our legacy of empowering young girls and women through sport. Please join us throughout the day for these special events, including a halftime presentation to honor our Women's Basketball Letterwinners. Jamie Carey, UT's single-season record holder for 3-pointers made and a recipient of a Big 12 Conference Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship, will be on hand, along with many others. In addition to recognizing girls and women in sport, The University will offer a variety of resources to help young women excel in school, prepare for college and pursue career goals. Several educational organizations from across the UT campus will be represented, including Social Work’s Con Mi Madre, the Engineering school’s Texas Girls Collaborative Project, the Saturday Morning Math Group and the Neighborhood Longhorns Program. The day's events will include:
1 p.m.: Texas Women's Basketball vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
3 p.m.: Texas Rewind
Fans must have a game ticket to participate in the expo. Purchase $5 discounted tickets by visiting TexasBoxOffice.com and using the promo code - UTANDME (one word) -- before 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7. Discounted tickets can also be purchased by calling UT Events, Sales and Services at (512) 232-3865 and mentioning UT and ME. We hope that you will join us for this special day as we recognize the accomplishments of many great women and look to continue empowering girls across Central Texas. |
