IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas guard Ashleigh Fontenette has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week for games contested Jan. 26-Feb. 1, the conference announced Monday. The award is chosen by a panel of media covering Big 12 women’s basketball. It is the second weekly honor for Fontenette and her second in a three-week span.
Fontenette recorded her first career start as a Longhorn and played a career-high 34 minutes in Texas’ 58-55 win at No. 4/3 Baylor on Feb. 1. She pulled down a career-high eight rebounds, including six in the first half. For the week, Fontenette averaged 9.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg. She shot .533 from the field (8-of-15) and added six steals and three assists.
Fontenette previously earned her first career honor from the league on Jan. 19. Both Fontenette and guard Yvonne Anderson have earned Big 12 Conference honors this season as Freshman of the Week. Anderson was tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Co-Freshmen of the Week on Dec. 22.
The No. 16 Longhorns return to action on Thursday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face the Cowgirls.
