Norman named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week

DALLAS -- University of Texas 5-8 junior guard Nina Norman (Houston, Texas/Jersey Village HS) was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Jan. 17-23, the conference office announced Monday.

Norman averaged 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals in two games last week for the No. 15 ranked Longhorns, who currently are 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12. Norman collects her first ever Big 12 weekly honor, and this also marks the first Big 12 weekly honor for a Texas player this season. Players are nominated by each school's sports information office and voted on by a panel of media who cover Big 12 women's basketball.

Norman sparked the Longhorns to an upset win over No. 4 Baylor, 69-55, on Saturday (Jan. 22). She scored a season-high 17 points, including eight in a key two-minute stretch late in the second half, to lead Texas over the Lady Bears. She also had a game-high and career-high tying five steals, including two in the final three minutes of the game. In the last 4:33, Norman had eight points (4-of-4 from the free throw line), one rebound, one assist and two steals.

Earlier in the week at Hartford, Conn., Norman had 13 points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists in UT's loss to No. 13 Connecticut (73-57). Her 13 points were a team high as she went 6-of-12 from the floor in the second half against the Huskies, scoring all of her points in the final period.

Norman has been in double-figure scoring three times in the last five games. She is second among the Longhorns in conference games scoring with 9.4 ppg.

Texas A&M 5-10 freshman Morenike Atunrase was chosen Big 12 Rookie of the Week after averaging 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 33.5 minutes of playing time during games at No. 20 Kansas State and at home versus Oklahoma.

The Longhorns take to the road for two games this week, playing at Oklahoma (11-5, 3-2 in Big 12) on Wednesday, Jan. 26 in a 7 p.m. game (Central) on FSN Southwest TV. The game also will be broadcast on KVET Radio/1300 the Zone (1300 AM) in the Central Texas area and can be accessed via the internet (TexasSports.com). On Saturday, Texas returns to national TV with a FSN nation-wide broadcast from Columbia, Missouri, where the Longhorn face Missouri (7-10, 1-5) in an 11 a.m. (Central) Big 12 contest.
