IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas guard Ashleigh Fontenette has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week for games contested Jan. 12-18, the conference announced Monday. The award is chosen by a panel of media covering Big 12 women’s basketball.   It is the first career honor for Fontenette and the second weekly conference award for the Longhorns this season.

Fontenette posted a career-high 21 points in Texas’ 74-60 victory over Nebraska on Jan. 14, including 12 points during a four-minute stretch in the second half.  With the effort, Fontenette became the first Longhorn freshman to score 20 or more points in a game since 2004 when current WNBA standout Tiffany Jackson connected for 22 points.  She is the third Longhorn this season to eclipse the 20 point mark.  The game was Fontenette’s third double-digit scoring effort as she set career highs in points (21), field goals (nine) and minutes (22).  The Pflugerville, Texas, native finished the week with 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Fontenette joins guard Yvonne Anderson as the second Longhorn this season to earn a weekly honor from the Big 12 Conference.  Anderson was tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Co-Freshmen of the Week on Dec. 22.

The No. 14 Longhorns return to action on Sunday, Jan. 25, when they travel to Norman, Okla., to face the third-ranked Sooners.  Sunday’s contest will air live on FSN with a noon tip.
