AUSTIN, Texas -- It's been a change of fortune early on in the 2006 Big 12 Conference women's basketball race, and Saturday (Jan. 14th) night's game could go a long way in throwing more confusion into the conference standings.
Tonight at 7 p.m. At the Frank Erwin Center, an exciting day of Longhorn doubleheader basketball began with the concludes when the Texas women (6-5 overall, 1-2 in the Big 12) host upstart Missouri.
The No. 24 Missouri women's basketball team, ranked nationally for the first time in 21 years, sits alone in first place in the Big 12 Conference. The Tigers (13-2) would go 4-0 in conference play for the first time in school history if they beat the Longhorns. Mizzou is riding a 12-game win streak.
The Longhorns began the season ranked 12th nationally but stumbled against a brutal schedule - a schedule which has been ranked as the nation's No. 1 or No. 2 toughest schedule all season long. This is UT's fifth game against a nationally-ranked opponent, as the Longhorns will be looking for their first win against the Top 25.
Texas brings great momentum into the game, defeating Iowa State 80-50 on Wednesday. Senior Daria Mieloszynska provided the spark, leading the Longhorns with 18 points on six 3-pointers, while All-America junior Tiffany Jackson dominated down low, adding 10 points, a career-high 17 rebounds and game-best eight steals.
Game promotions at the Texas-Missouri game include the "Ultimate Assist". Fans can get half-price admission to the game by redeeming specially-marked Sprite cans at the Erwin Center south box office one hour prior to tip-off. The seating for this promotion is mezzanine seating only, limit two per can. In addition, fans may go to Bevo's Bargains to download a coupon for a $2 general admission ticket.
A half-time feature for the kids will be a special appearance of Sesame Street's Elmo, to promote the upcoming Sesame Street show at the Erwin Center. The national anthem wil be performed by soul and gospel recording artist LZ Love.
Tickets may be purchased at TexasBoxOffice.com or in person at the following locations: Bellmont Hall Athletics Ticket Office (Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m-4 p.m. Central); and at any Texas Box Office location, including the Frank Erwin Center (Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and game days prior to tipoff) or at Austin area H-E-B stores.
