Brewer transfers to Women's Basketball

Jan. 6, 2011

AUSTIN, Texas -- Former University of South Carolina forward Kayla Brewer will transfer to The University of Texas, Longhorns head coach Gail Goestenkors announced Thursday. Brewer is set to enroll in classes for the spring semester at Texas.

Per NCAA transfer rules, the 6-foot-1 Brewer will be permitted to practice with the Longhorns as soon as her admissions process is complete. However, she will not be able to participate in games or travel with the team.

"Kayla is an outstanding student-athlete who will excel both on the court and in the classroom," Goestenkors said. "She will add athleticism and versatility to our team with her ability to play both inside and out."

Brewer graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla., a year early as the class salutatorian to join the Gamecock program for the 2010-11 season. She played in seven games for South Carolina, averaging 13.9 minutes per game. Brewer turned in 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 points per game while recording a season-best seven points and eight rebounds, including four offensive, at Penn State on Nov. 21.

Ranked as the eighth-best player and second-best forward in the 2011 class by ESPNU, Brewer was a three-time All-Gateway Conference selection in high school and named All-State First Team and Class Acts Scholar Athlete by Florida Union Times. The three-time all-state selection, including first-team honors as a junior and senior, participated in U16 and U17 Team Trials in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
