Fussell earns Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week accolade

Jan. 3, 2011

IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas freshman guard Chassidy Fussell (Troy, Tenn.) has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week for games contested Dec. 27-Jan. 2, the conference announced Monday. The award is chosen by a panel of media covering Big 12 women’s basketball. It is the second career honor for Fussell who was previously named the league freshman of the week on Nov. 22.

Fussell was named the Most Valuable Player of the Maggie Dixon Surf ‘n Slam Classic (Dec. 28-30) Torero Division while leading the Longhorns to the championship. She averaged a team-high 17.7 points over a three-game span last week, including UT’s 94-50 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday, and scored 16 or more points in each contest. Fussell also grabbed 4.7 rebounds a game and shot .442 (19-of-45) from the field, including .455 (10-of-22) from the three-point line.

Additionally, the 5-10 guard nailed the winning 3-pointer from the right corner with 1.3 seconds remaining in UT’s 80-77 win over Cincinnati in the Surf ‘n Slam Classic.

The No. 22 Longhorns open Big 12 Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Missouri. Tip is set for 4 p.m. Central in Columbia, Mo.
