2006 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relay quotes: Day two

John Chaplin, Meet Referee
Any time a record is close to being broken, I always go back and verify the results. We re-read the photos from the running events and re-checked the field event scores and found that in the 100 meters we had given him 10.36, but when we re-read it, his real time was 10.35. The revised results show that he has the collegiate record in the 100 at 10.35 breaking the previous record of 10.39, a record in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.83 and that he has the overall record as well with 8,465 points. The pictures will be sent to USA track & field, the NCAA and the records committee will look at them and then it will be approved.

Bubba Thornton, Texas Men’s Track and Field Head Coach
Trey is a competitor, he and [Donovan] Kilmartin really pulled for each other throughout the competition.  One of the things you noticed in the 1,500 is that Kilmartin took the lead to help keep Trey moving and it also improved his score at the same time.  I think when you look back at the two days, Trey laid out two collegiate records and then the National record in the multi-events. It was quite an event.

For us, you have to remember that this is the same young man that four weeks ago had a severe injury at the Indoor Championships and we didn’t know until Monday or Tuesday of the next week the severity of the injury.  I want to give our medical people credit for getting him here.  It has been a team effort and Trey has done his deal.  He and Donavon are two of the guys that we will be looking at in 2008 (for the Olympics).  As they put more of these competitions together, everything is going to come together for these guys.  Trey breaking this record, when you look at the people who have held it before, it is pretty awesome stuff.

I give the credit to Mario Sategna, our multi-events coach; he works closely with the guys.  We are really proud of the two guys and especially to have a National Collegiate record set here at the Texas Relays, it kind of says it all about Texas.  It has been a great year for the whole school.

Trey Hardee, Texas (University/College Men Decathlon)
On breaking the collegiate Decathlon record: It really wasn't on my mind coming into this weekend.  I mainly just wanted to get my auto-qualifier out of the way.  As the events progressed and the day went on, I realized I had a shot at it, and I got it.

On learning he had broken the record after believing he had missed it by one point: I was underneath the stands when Bubba [Thornton] told me they were going to go back to re-look at the tapes again.  Then he told me I had the record.  To tell the truth, when the race ended I was just happy to be finished.

On his feelings following the event: I am just happy to get my auto-qualifier out of the way, happy my ankle held up and glad to have my parents here to see it all.  I am just enjoying the moment.  It hasn't really sunk in for me yet because it is at home.  It almost just feels like a really good practice.  It will probably sink in some time next week.

On his ankle injury: At the Indoor Championships I sprained my ankle.  I have just been taking it day-by day and rehabbing it.  I just started doing some of the events again last week.  I hadn't touched a pole for pole vault, hadn't thrown a javelin or a disc for a while.  This was just supposed to be a meet to see where we were at, but it worked out.

Julie Pickler, Washington State (University/College Women Heptathlon)
It was a great event for me.  Long jump was a great personal record, but otherwise, it was just a good meet altogether.  I felt strong.  My twin sister and I were high school hurdlers in Texas, so it is great to come back and win this meet.

Katara Rosby, anchor for Texas (University/College Women 4x800 relay)
Since we had a lead you aren’t supposed to look back and I really was just trying to listen to everybody yelling so I knew if someone was coming to get me. I knew I had to dig in because I wanted us to win.  This is a good meet to see where our 4x800 is because this is our first time running this event this season.

Adrian Foster, Oral Roberts (University Men 4x800 relay)
It is a blessing for us to win this event.  We have come so far through injuries and everything.  We want to thank God for everything He has allowed us to do here.  We came here to put our school on the map and let everyone know that Oral Roberts is here.

Kristen Callan, Virginia Tech (University/College Women Hammer Throw)
This is my first time here, and I've always wanted to come here. The competition here is good, and I think that helped me in my performance. It feels good to come to a meet like this and perform like I did.

Spyridon Jullien, Virginia Tech (University/College Men Hammer Throw)
It's great. I really didn’t feel well before I started because I had a problem with my back, but I pulled it off at the end with some really good throws. I threw just short of my personal best, and I'm happy with that result.

Faithy Kamangila, Oral Roberts (University Women 5,000 Meters)
I am happy that I won, but I am not happy with my time.  My personal best is 16:18, so I wanted to run at least faster than that.  But I am happy to have won the race.

Tonny Okello, South Alabama (University Men 5,000 Meters)
It was an interesting race.  I was happy to defend my title running against this competition.  I knew to expect very good competition at a race like this.  I am very happy to defend my title.
