AUSTIN, Texas (AP)-- Texas' Trey Hardee broke a 13-year-old NCAA decathlon record in the 100-meter dash and won four of the five first-day decathlon events as the gun went off on the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Wednesday.
Hardee jump-started his day with a 10.36 finish in the 100, besting the previous event record of 10.40 set in 1993 by California's Chris Huffins. The Longhorns' senior also won the long jump with a leap of 25 feet, 3 1/4 inches, the shot put with a heave of 47 feet, 5 inches and the 400 with a time of 49.11.
The only event Hardee didn't capture was the high jump, which was won by Texas teammate Donovan Kilmartin at 6 feet, 11 inches. Hardee and Kilmartin lead the event at the halfway point with 4399 and 4175 points, respectively.
The NCAA decathlon record is 8463 points.
Ryanne Dupree won the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.52, and leads the women's heptathlon after the first four events with 3426 points, just 18 points ahead of Julie Pickler from Washington St. Megan Akre from LSU is in third place, Virginia Tech's Saskia Triesscheijn sits in fourth and Pickler's teammate and sister Diana rounds out the top five.
Texas A&M-Commerce's Niki Williams won the women's 3,000 steeplechase with a 11:24.47 finish.
Dustin Hafernick of Angelo St. fended off a late charge by Texas-San Antonio's Chris Layman in the final 50 meters to win the men's 3,000 steeplechase in 9:45.16, just 0.15 seconds ahead of Layman and 0.51 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Roel Elizalde.
Rice's Lennie Waite completed the 1,500 in 4:40.47, less than a second ahead of TCU's Cassie Hostick. Calum Neff of Houston ran away from the field in the final 200 meters of the men's 1,500 to finish nearly four seconds ahead of Texas' John Arnold.
Emily Field, running unattached, outlasted the pack to take the women's 10,000 in 36:48.13 while John Kosgei of South Plains won the men's 10,000 in 31:05.32.
