METARIE, La. -- Despite graduating the NCAA collegiate record holder, a two-time NCAA Champion high jumper and two-time NCAA Midwest Region Champion thrower, the Longhorns’ men’s track and field team is ranked No. 18 in the nation, according to the preseason poll released by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The 25-team poll has a new format this year that was voted on by the coaches at the USTFCCCA National Convention. The USTFCCCA Division I indoor track and field rankings are compiled solely from NCAA descending order lists. The preseason rankings are based on the final descending order list of the previous season.

Florida State tops the preseason rankings, looking to add a NCAA Indoor title to the back-to-back outdoor championships from 2006 and 2007. Washington, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Louisville, Stanford, Northern Iowa, Arkansas and Baylor round out the top 10 teams.

The Big 12 leads all conferences with seven teams in the national poll, ahead of six teams from the Southeastern Conference. Joining the Horns and 10th-ranked Baylor are: No. 11 Kansas, No. 12 Nebraska, No. 17 Oklahoma, No. 21 Texas A&M and No. 23 Missouri.

The Longhorns open the 2008 season at the Houston Indoor Opener in Houston, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 12.
