Men’s Track and Field lands 10 on Academic All-Big 12 teams

The University of Texas men’s track and field team landed 10 student-athletes on the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Teams, the conference office has announced. Leading the Longhorns were senior Donovan Kilmartin (combined events), who earned a 4.0 GPA in the spring of 2007, and sophomore Will Schroeder (middle distance), who earned a 4.0 GPA in the fall of ’07.

Joining Kilmartin and Schroeder on the first team were seniors Brandon McFarling (pole vault) and Ryan Wilson (distance), junior Kyle Miller (distance), sophomore Shawn Schmidt (combined events) and redshirt freshman Habben Berhane (distance).

In addition, three Longhorns were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team. That group included senior Leonel Manzano (distance), junior Dustin Bynum (javelin) and redshirt freshman Brandon Birdsong (distance).

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team features student-athletes maintaining a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or during the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests.

Athletes are nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices. Freshmen and transfer student-athletes are not eligible during their first year of academic residence.
