Men's Cross Country wins Texas State Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Texas men's cross country team opened its 2008 season with a victory at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos on Saturday. The Horns scored 20 points and finished ahead of UT-San Antonio (49 points) and Angelo State (97 points). Freshman Rory Tunningley earned medalist honors, finishing the five-mile course in 25:46.0. Seven of Texas' eight competitors, including five freshmen, finished in the Top 11.

Freshman Brock Simmons finished second for the Horns and third overall in 25:54.3, while classmate Lorin Wilson placed fourth overall in 25:58.7. Rookie Robert Gibson was UT's fourth finisher, placing fifth overall, with a time of 26:04.3. Sophomore Bradley Lowry rounded out the scoring with a seventh-place finish in 26:20.1.

Freshmen Will Ahearn and Rob Wetzel, who is competing in his first year of cross country after taking part in both indoor and outdoor track and field last season, and sophomore Logan Gonzalez also saw action for Texas. Ahearn placed 10th overall in 26:25.2, Wetzel finished 12th in 26:31.5 and Gonzalez ended up 24th in 27:53.0.

The Horns will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.
