Four current or former members of men's track and field team graduate

Dec. 8, 2012

Four current or former members of the Men's Track and Field team took part in Saturday's graduation ceremonies on The University of Texas campus.

D.J. Monroe, Trevante Rhodes, Maston Wallace and Alex Williams all collected their diplomas.

Wallace, a three-time All-America pole vaulter, will be competing for the Longhorns in the spring.

Rhodes and Williams, both sprinters, completed their eligibility in the spring.

Monroe has spent most of his time at Texas on the football field, but he was an All-American at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships by helping the 400-meter relay unit finish sixth.

"UT has done a lot of things for me. I thank them for making me become the man that I am now," said Monroe, who majored in ALD/Youth and Community Studies and hopes to work with teens from troubled neighborhoods "I ran track, and it was great. Those guys welcomed me with open arms."

Rhodes, Wallace and Williams all earned degrees in education.

Head coach Bubba Thornton was proud of their accomplishments.

"Sports have become so important, but to me graduation completes the cycle," Thornton said. "They've been great citizens here at the University. They've earned All-America honors. They've been great ambassadors for the school. It's a good time. It's all about them right now. They've lined up in every way we've asked them to and excelled. We're really excited for them and their families."
