Hayes voted NCAA South Central Region Coach of the Year
Nov. 13, 2012 NEW ORLEANS - John Hayes was voted the NCAA South Central Region Coach of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday evening. Hayes, who is in his fifth season, won the award for the second-straight year and has the Longhorns poised for a strong showing at Saturday's NCAA Cross Country Championships. Texas is fifth in the nation, its highest ranking ever in the USTFCCCA poll. Hayes directed to the Horns to their second-consecutive NCAA South Central Regional title last Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. Ryan Dohner (fourth), Craig Lutz (sixth), Rory Tunningley (seventh), Kyle Merber (ninth), Patrick McGregor (12th) and Trevor Van Ackeren (17th) secured All-South Central Region honors by finishing in the top 25 at the meet. Texas also claimed second in last month's Big 12 Championships, which was held in Austin. The Longhorns finished behind Oklahoma State which is currently the top-ranked team in the country. Hayes has led the Longhorns into the NCAA Championships each of the last four seasons. The Horns finished 11th at last year's NCAA Championships. The Longhorns haven't finished in the top five at the NCAA meet since 1990 when they were fourth.
