No. 5 University of Texas men’s cross country will try for back-to-back regional titles at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country South Central Regional Championships on Friday at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark.

The men’s race begins at 12:15 p.m. Central. Live results can be followed at BranchSportsTech.com.

The Longhorns moved up two spots in the latest national poll after a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, held in Austin on Oct. 27.

Last season, Texas won its first-ever South Central Regional title with five runners finishing in the overall top 15. Four of those five top runners return this season, led by Craig Lutz who paced the Longhorns with a 10K time of 30:38.6 at regionals last season.

The South Central Region is comprised of 22 men’s teams from three states (Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas) and eight different conferences (Big 12, Conference-USA, Great West, Southeastern Conference, Southland, Southwestern Athletic Conference, Sun Belt and Western Athletic Conference).

Three of the 22 men’s teams are ranked – No. 5 Texas, No. 10 Arkansas and No. 29 Texas A&M. Host Arkansas is coming off its third consecutive SEC title and has won five of the last seven South Central Regional meets. Texas A&M returns last season’s regional champion, Henry Lelei, who also won the SEC title two weeks ago.

The regional meets serve as a gateway to the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships, which will be contested Saturday, Nov. 17, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The top two teams and top four individuals not on an advancing team receive an automatic berth into the national meet. Additional teams and individuals are chosen through an at-large selection process.
