Schmidt completes first day of decathlon at World Junior Championships

BEIJING -- Incoming University of Texas freshman Shawn Schmidt (Plano, Texas) completed day one of the 11th IAAF World Track and Field Junior Championships, scoring 3,014 points through five events of the decathlon.

After opening with an 11.43 time for 767 points in the 100-meter dash, Schmidt had a setback, fouling his three attempts in the long jump. The 2006 American Junior Decathlon Champion bounced back with a 10th-place finish in the shot put, hitting the sand on his third attempt with a mark of 12.95 meters.

As the day progressed, Schmidt grew stronger and, in his premier event, cleared the high jump bar at 2.04 meters to score 840 points toward his individual score. During the first event of the afternoon session, he tied with Cubašs Garcia Yordanis the decathlon leader after the first day - for third-place and placed behind Chinašs Liu Haibo (2.10 meters) and Finlandšs Itani Sami (2.07 meters).

Schmidt finished the day strong in the 400-meter dash, clocking 51.58 for third in his heat and 743 points.

Yordanis sits in first place with 4,202 points while New Zealandšs Jordan Vandermade is in second with 4,180 points.
