Crouser named to USA Today All-USA Track and Field Team

Aug. 12, 2011

AUSTIN - University of Texas Men's Track and Field signee Ryan Crouser (Gresham, Ore.) has been named to the 2011 USA Today All-USA Track and Field Team, the publication announced. Crouser, who will join the Longhorns this month, set the national high school record in the indoor shot put and discus during his senior year.

During the indoor season, Crouser posted a record-breaking shot put mark of 77-2.75, which stands as the second-best throw ever by a high school athlete, indoor or outdoor. He shattered the previous record of 74-11, set in 1990, by over two feet. In addition, he set the U.S. prep indoor 16-pound shot put record after he broke a 27-year old mark with a throw of 63-11.

Following up his indoor records, Crouser set the discus record with his throw of 237-6 (72.36m). Crouser bested the previous mark of 236-6 set by Mason Finley in 2009. The Gresham, Ore., native also participated in the shot put at the same meet and recorded a mark of 73-6 (22.40m) for a shot put/discus one-day double that has not been matched in recent prep history.

The discus record capped off a stellar senior season for Crouser who battled a leg injury throughout most of the outdoor campaign. During 2010-11, he set three national records and claimed the Oregon Class 6-A State titles in both the shot and discus en route being named the Gatorade Oregon Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The teams were coordinated by Fred Baer. Boys selections were made by Jack Shepard, editor of Track and Field News magazine. Criteria included ranking on USA TODAY and Track and Field News national lists, the number of top performances and head-to-head competition during the regular season and in major postseason meets.
