Sategna leads U.S. to victory in 2009 Thorpe Cup

Texas associate head coach Mario Sategna led the United States to a convincing victory over Germany in the 2009 Thorpe Cup over the weekend, 39,462 to 35,927. Each team had seven competitors with the top five scores counting towards the team score.
It marked the 16th meeting in a series of annual international team decathlons between the USA and Germany with the U.S. now holding a 13-3 advantage in the series.
Tom Pappas led the way for the U.S. winning the overall title with 8,569 points followed by teammate Joseph Detmer, who finished second with 7,892 points. Germany's Jan Felix Knobel placed third with 7,758 points. Overall, the U.S. team nailed down six of the top seven spots in the competition.
